Overview of the Broadcast Industry
The broadcast industry has come a long way since its beginnings. Initially, the government for purposes of propaganda mainly controlled the industry covertly or overtly. As democracy became stronger and individuals asserted their freedom, broadcasting began to be owned by private individuals. It was after this that the changes began to speed up.

In the last 10 years, developments have really accelerated. The changes have been swift and the survivors have been forced to adopt the latest delivery technologies in order to survive. Technology has become more than just a piece of equipment. The choice of technology decides the fate of the broadcaster. The Broadcaster has to bring his cost of operation down, give much better quality of programming and has to somehow stand out from the crowd.

On the technology front, a few companies are leading the broadcast technology away from the traditional linear technology towards the "new age" computer based open technologies. This has resulted in lower cost of the equipment; lower operating costs, cutting-edge programming techniques as well as a much better "on-air" look and feel.

Benchmark has thrived on bringing these new technologies to the South and South East Asian markets. We were the first to recognize the benefits of the web-based news reporting and we brought a newsroom that was based on the web browser.
